Sharing as a link

Dundas Dashboard lets you link directly to the dashboard or mashup you are currently viewing by using a URL. You have the option of choosing between the standard Silverlight URL (for Silverlight-capable clients) and the HTML URL (for HTML5 capable clients such as mobiles).

To obtain a URL link to the dashboard (or mashup) being viewed:

  1. Click the Share button in the Toolbar. The Share wizard is displayed.
    The Share wizard.
  2. Select the option “Share this dashboard or mashup as a link for Silverlight or HTML”.
  3. Click Next. The URL links for both Silverlight and the HTML Viewer/Explorer are displayed, but note that the HTML links apply to dashboards only and not to mashups.
    The URL link.
  4. Select the text of any of the URLs in the wizard, and then press CTRL+C to copy the URL to your clipboard.
  5. Alternatively, click “Open this link in a new browser window” to access the URL link directly. The URL will be resolved to its full or long format in the new browser window.
  6. Click Finish to close the Share wizard.

Dashboard URL format

Dashboard Silverlight URL links actually resolve to a long URL format like this:

where:

  • hostname is the host name of the server running Dundas Dashboard.
  • instance is the instance of Dundas Dashboard (in case you have multiple versions running on hostname).
  • GUID is the dashboard's globally unique identifier.

Other URL parameters are also supported. For more details, see Using Viewer.aspx.

Dashboard HTML URLs resolve to a similar format, except Viewer.aspx is replaced with HtmlViewer.ashx.

Note: Users need to have permissions to view dashboards in Dundas Dashboard to make use of this URL.

Sharing a mashup with other users

A URL link to a mashup is valid for other users as well. However, whether a user will be able to see the full content of the mashup still depends on that user's permission to view the individual dashblocks (and underlying KPIs/datasets) comprising the mashup.

Note: The Design Explorer, Dashboard Directory and Viewer Navigation Bar for a user will list only the mashups created by that user.

Sharing as a dashboard image

Dundas Dashboard also lets you share a URL link to an image of a dashboard (or dashblock) you are currently viewing. The link goes to a web page that simply displays the dashboard (or dashblock) image without the need for Silverlight on the client. Hence, the resulting URL link can be easily accessed from a wide range of client platforms, including mobile devices.

Note: This option is only available if your Dundas Dashboard server has been configured to use the Dundas Dashboard Image Creation Service.

To obtain a URL link to an image of a dashboard (or dashblock):

  1. Click the Share button in the Toolbar. The Share wizard is displayed.
    The Share wizard.
  2. Select the option “Share this dashboard or a single dashblock as a dashboard image”.
  3. Click Next.
  4. If you are viewing a mashup that shows multiple dashblocks, select a dashblock from the list on the left. A preview of the dashblock appears on the right. Click Next.
    Choose a dashblock.
  5. In the next step of the wizard, enter a name for the dashboard image.
    Enter the image name.
  6. (Optional) Select the option to generate a timestamp in the top-left corner of the dashboard image.
  7. Click Next. The URL link to the dashboard image is displayed in the next screen.
    Image URL.
  8. You can select the text of the URL in the wizard, and then press CTRL+C to copy the URL to your clipboard.
  9. You can also click “Open this link in a new browser window” to generate and view the dashboard image (this operation may take several seconds to complete).

  10. Click Finish to close the Share wizard.

A dashboard image will be automatically created, which you can access by clicking the Manage button in the Toolbar. From the Manage dialog, you can retrieve the actual URL link by viewing the properties of the dashboard image.

Note: The timestamp in the top-left corner of the generated image is displayed using the region and language settings as specified by the ddimage user account that runs the Dundas Dashboard Image Creation Service. If you change these settings on the Dundas Dashboard server, remember to change it also for the ddimage account on the image creation server.

Sharing dashboards with formula results

If you are viewing a dashboard and later apply a formula to it, you will need to perform an extra step before you can share the dashboard (plus formula result) with other users. Specifially, you must do the following:

  1. Create a bookmark of the dashboard you are currently viewing (that displays formula results).
  2. View the newly created bookmark from the Bookmarks sidebar and verify your formula results are still visible.
  3. Click the Share button in the toolbar to share the current dashboard as a link or image (as usual).
