Adding Contextual Metrics

Overview

This article shows how to add and configure contextual metrics for your KPI. Contextual metrics are similar to measure values and can be used to provide meaningful comparisons with your KPI. An example of a contextual metric is a sales goal figure for the current year, which is displayed as a horizontal line on a year-to-date sales chart.

A contextual metric must be of the same data type and use the same unit of measurement as your measure values.

From the Measures and Contextual Metrics tab of the KPI Designer, you can view the list of contextual metric values (if any) that were chosen through the KPI Setup Wizard.

As an example, the chart in the figure below displays a KPI with a constant value contextual metric, which appears as a horizontal line for comparison purposes.

Adding contextual metrics

Click the Add Contextual Metric button if you want to add other contextual metrics from the base virtual structure to your KPI.

Adding a calculated contextual metric

To add a calculated contextual metric to your KPI:

  1. In the Measures and Contextual Metrics tab of the KPI Designer, click Add Calculated Value. The Calculated Metric Definition Wizard is displayed.

  2. In the first step of the wizard, enter a friendly name for the contextual metric in the box provided.
  3. Enter a description for the contextual metric in the Description box.
  4. Choose the contextual metric type. Depending on your choice, proceed with one of the following options:

Editing a contextual metric

To edit an existing calculated contextual metric:

  1. In the Measures and Contextual Metrics tab of the KPI Designer, select the contextual metric you want to modify from the Contextual Metrics grid.
  2. Click the Edit button in the Action grid column. The appropriate step of the Contextual Metric Definition Wizard is displayed. Perform steps in the wizard as shown in the section, Adding a calculated contextual metric.

To change the name of a contextual metric from the Contextual Metrics grid:

  1. Locate the grid row corresponding to your contextual metric.
  2. Select the cell in the Contextual Metric Name column.
  3. Click inside the cell to begin editing.
  4. Type the new name in the text box, then press ENTER.

To choose a different aggregation function for your contextual metric:

  1. In the Contextual Metrics grid, locate the grid row corresponding to your contextual metric.
  2. Select the cell in the Aggregator column.
  3. Click inside the cell. A dropdown list control appears.
  4. Click the dropdown list and choose an aggregate function from the resulting menu.

Deleting a contextual metric

To delete an existing contextual metric from your KPI:

  1. In the Measures and Contextual Metrics tab of the KPI Designer, select the contextual metric you want to remove from the Contextual Metrics grid.
  2. Click the Delete Contextual Metric button in the first grid column. When prompted to confirm the operation, click Yes. The contextual metric is removed from the Contextual Metrics grid.

Replacing a contextual metric

Click the Replace contextual metric button in the first grid column to replace a contextual metric with another one from the base virtual structure. Once replaced, any existing dashboards using this KPI will continue to work without modifications.

Choosing a default contextual metric

If your KPI has more than one contextual metric defined, choose one of them to be the default contextual metric by selecting the appropriate option in the Default column of the Contextual Metrics grid. If the KPI has only one contextual metric, it will be automatically selected as the default.
