After trying to install a retail license file, you may find that the evaluation license and watermark are still present. This article will help you troubleshoot license installation issues.

Verifying the license file

The first thing to make sure is that the license file you try to install is the right one. The license file is XML-based, so you can open this in any text editor. After you open it, check for the following:

00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 Your name Retail ... 5 0 0 ... 250 5 5 ...

Installing the license file

The next step is to install the license file which must go into the www\App_Data\Licenses folder.

See Installing license files using the License Installer for the complete steps.

The License Installer gives you the option of choosing a target Dashboard Instance to install to so that you don't need to specify the folder location directly.

But you can still select the Licenses folder yourself using the Folder option.

After installing, you should verify that the license file was correctly installed to the target folder. The license goes in the folder where Dashboard is installed under www\App_Data\Licenses. For example, C:\Program Files\Dundas Data Visualization Inc\Dundas Dashboard\{InstanceName}\www\App_Data\Licenses.

Open the license file in the target folder and verify that it's installed. If the file inside Dashboard's license folder has not changed, you may not have permission to write to that folder.

License file name

You can choose to name the license file anything you want. By default it's Dundas.Dashboard.lic, and Dashboard will only look for this file. If you want to use a different file name for your license, edit Dashboard's configuration file, uncomment the licenseFilename key, and update the value:

After installing the license file

Make sure to restart the Dashboard server application once you've installed the license file. You can do this by recycling Dashboard's application pool or restarting IIS.

Verifying the license in Dashboard

You can see what license file is installed by going to the Home screen and clicking About in the toolbar:

Dundas Dashboard About dialog.

The license information listed here should match the contents of the license file.

Final troubleshooting steps

If you have done all of the above and still don't see the correct license, you have either not replaced the license file or the Dashboard server application has not restarted. There is a simple test to make sure you've targeted the right location:

  1. Move or rename the license file in Dashboard's license folder.
  2. Restarting the Dundas Dashboard Website.
  3. Open Dundas Dashboard in your browser.

You will see the following error message:

License not found error.

License not found error.

If you don't see this error, you have not replaced the correct license file.

Restore the license file and reload your browser. The error will not occur and you will have the correct license applied.
