Using the Navigation Bar

The Dashboard Viewer provides a Navigation Bar which lets you navigate the hierarchy of bookmarks, Dundas Dashboard projects, dashboards, and mashups that are available for viewing.

Simply double-click on or drag items from the Navigation Bar to the viewing area to be displayed.

Tip: Dashboard designers have the ability to hide dashboards and dashblocks from the Navigation Bar. This can be done at design-time by setting either the Hide From Navigation or Hide From Viewer Ribbon property of a dashboard or dashblock at design-time. This is useful in cases where dashboards are being used simply as popups or hover-overs, and thus you don't want viewers to navigate to them directly. See The Dashboard Canvas for more details.

Expand and collapse

Click the pin button at the top-right corner of the Navigation Bar in order to collapse or expand it.

Changing the navigation location

The Navigation Bar lets you navigate the hierarchy of bookmarks, Dundas Dashboard projects, dashboards, and mashups that are available for viewing. While you are at a certain point in the hierarchy, all of the available items (e.g. dashboards and dashblocks) under that location are displayed in a horizontal navigation slider.

The root of the navigation hierarchy is represented by the All item. Below this item are the various project folders and the Bookmarks folder.

When you choose to view a dashboard or dashblock from the Design Explorer, the Navigation Bar will automatically switch the navigation location to the project folder corresponding to the dashboard/dashblock. In this case, only the available dashboards and dashblocks from that project will be listed in the navigation bar. In order to see dashboards/dashblocks from all projects, you must change the navigation location to All.

To change the navigation location:

  1. Click the Select a location folder icon at the top-left corner of the Navigation Bar. The Location Menu is displayed.
    The Location Menu.
  2. From the Location Menu, expand items as desired, then select the new location.
  3. The full path of the new location is displayed in the Navigation Bar and the list of items appearing in the navigation slider is updated to reflect the new location.

The location path has clickable links, which let you navigate directly to any parent location in the navigation hierarchy.

Tip: You can also change the current navigation folder from script.

Navigation slider

The navigation slider is a horizontal, scrollable list of bookmarks, dashboards, dashblocks, and mashups that are available for viewing. The precise list of available items depends on the current navigation location and search terms, if any.

The main parts of the navigation slider are:

  1. An arrow button for scrolling left.
  2. A preview icon representing a bookmark, dashboard, dashblock, or mashup. Hover over an icon with your mouse to see a descriptive tooltip. To view the corresponding item in the viewing area, simply double-click on the icon or drag the icon and drop it onto the viewing area.
  3. An arrow button for scrolling right.
  4. A horizontal scrollbar for scrolling left or right.

Tip: The preview icons of dashblocks that are currently being displayed are highlighted with a blue background in the navigation slider. Similarly, if a dashboard is being viewed, its preview icon will be highlighted in the slider.

Mashups

A mashup is a personalized dashboard that you assemble using dashblocks. To create a mashup you simply drag (or double-click on) a dashblock from the Navigation Bar to the viewing area. Each successive dashblock will be automatically arranged in the viewing area. You can further reposition the dashblocks in the viewing area by dragging them to a new quadrant, for example.

A mashup consisting of 6 dashblocks is displayed in the Dashboard Viewer.

Searching

Use the Search box to locate specific dashboards by name under the current navigation location. The items appearing in the navigation slider are updated dynamically as you type search terms.
